Spring is here, the trees are starting to bloom, and buyers are planning their house hunting trips to the Lake! Spring also means “Spring Cleaning Time,” especially if your house is on the market. So open up the blinds, freshen up bed covers, trim up the yard, and give your home a fresh new look. With all of these touch-ups your home is sure to leave a lasting impression on a potential buyer.
Natural Light Is Key
Natural light is a key showing feature in any home and can make a home seem more inviting and more spacious to a potential buyer. There are several important items that play an important role in allowing natural light into a home. First, open up the blinds and let light fill the room. Sunlight can cause the color of blinds to fade overtime and dust to settle on the blades, often times a quick wipe down of the blinds and sills will restore the blinds to almost new. Finally, the view out of the windows is important too, especially if overlooking the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks, because that is the number one selling feature. So ensure the windows are free of smudges and sparkle so buyers can see the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.
Create and Inviting Environment
Make sure your home smells as inviting as it looks, and take a few minutes to make sure there are no unwanted odors in your home. Some key areas to check are the dishwasher, refrigerator, garbage disposal, and the bathrooms, because water can settle in these areas and produce unpleasant odors. Here are a few quick things you can do to make your home smell inviting. If there is a slight smell in the dishwasher just boil some lemon juice and put in the dishwasher and then put the lemon rinds in the garbage disposal. Finally if the refrigerator does not smell fresh, just place some cotton balls in an open container with vanilla or orange juice. The cotton balls will absorb the fragrance and leave the refrigerator smelling fresh!
Lighten Up the Walls
With the Spring sun shining bright, now is the time use the natural light to freshen up the walls of your home. This can be as simple as using a wet mop or rag with warm water to wipe any dust off the walls or touching up areas that might have scuffs or scratches with a fresh coat of paint. This could also be an opportunity to lighten up any dark paint colors in a home so that small spaces appear to have an open large feel to a buyer. Using light neutral colors is a key component in the home staging process.
Don’t Forget the Basics
Even though a “Spring Cleaning” is often viewed as a much deeper clean than normal, don’t forget the basics. The basics are important such as, sweeping, mopping, dusting, and wiping down counter tops.
Make a Great First Impression
A home’s first impression is curb appeal, so make sure it makes a good one! There are several small budget friendly “Spring Cleaning” steps a home owner can take to make sure that their home makes a great first impression every time.
- Make sure the yard is free of any debris and leaves.
- Ensure the lawn is consistently freshly cut.
- Freshen mulch in bedded areas.
- Pressure wash the house, especially if the home has vinyl siding. Pressure washing a home is very important and should be done at least once a year. (Make sure not to use too much PSI when cleaning your home so damage is not caused to the siding.) Why not add this to your Spring Cleaning list, so that the outside of your home remains fresh and bright and does not develop a dingy appearance.
- If you have a green thumb and enjoy gardening, it definitely does not hurt to add some color to the front of your home with some beautiful flowers and greenery.
- Flowers and greenery are always a nice touch, but don’t give yourself more than you can handle. They are not a necessity just an added bonus.
